The character was created amid the martial arts craze in the 1970s, and some of Shang-Chi's earliest appearances are criticized for their stereotypical approach.
Shang-Chi joins an ever-growing field of developing projects that will reshape the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame.
As for Cretton, a half-Japanese filmmaker who was born in Hawaii, he seems very much in line with the type of directors Marvel has been choosing recently. Cretton made the critically-acclaimed film Short Term 12, which starred Captain Marvel herself Brie Larson in her first leading role.
Cretton is now directing "Just Mercy", starring Brie Larson and Michael B. Jordan.
Callaham has comic book credentials in his own write, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 on which he worked with director Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns. Shang-Chi, known as the "Master of Kung Fu," first appeared in Special Marvel Edition #15 in 1973. It is clear that after Marvel Studios' unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, Kevin Feige's next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves with ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera.
This decision by Marvel Studio to tackle a movie featuring Shang-Chi is an interesting one, since there has yet to be an Asian superhero in any movie previously, and this would be the first Asian superhero in a Marvel Studios movie, unless you count Doctor Strange's loyal assistant Wong. That field already includes a Black Widow movie, sequels to Black Panther and Doctor Strange, and an Eternals film, and while many of Marvel's ambitions for its future remain in shadow, that's an exciting lineup already. Marvel Studios has three release dates claimed for 2021, including February 12th, May 7th, and November 5th.
