Witnesses are depicting horrifying scenes from the city of Christchurch, New Zealand on Friday following mass shootings by one or more gunman that occurred at two mosques in the city.

The gunman in a mosque shooting in Christchurch livestreamed the incident for 17 minutes, local media reported.

San Francisco Police say extra officers are being dispatched to mosques in the city after two mosque shootings in New Zealand.

"Whilst I cannot give any confirmation at this stage around fatalities and casualties, what I can say is that it is clear that this is one of New Zealand's darkest days", the PM said.

Police attempt to move people away from outside a mosque in central Christchurch, New Zealand, Friday.

Three men and a woman are in custody, police said, adding that they had found and neutralised a number of IEDS (improvised explosive devices).

"Police are responding with its full capability to manage the situation, but the risk environment remains extremely high".

It is believed shots have also been fired at Christchurch Hospital, which is now in lockdown.

Reporters working on will be working to source the latest information, reaction, pictures and video related to this story. "Some are still inside and we have been calling but can't get hold of them", Ibrahim said.

"I was in the side room, so I didn't see who was shooting but I saw that some people were running out to my room where I was in, I saw some people had blood on their body and some people were limping".

The hospital has alerted the public that it is in lockdown, with no staff or patients able to enter or leave the buildings.

EARLIER: POLICE are responding to a critical incident in Christchurch, New Zealand after dozens of shots were heard being fired inside a mosque.

The Herald is carrying a report that terrified mosque-goers who escaped the shooting told a neighbour that the gunman wearing military uniform had a lot of magazines strapped to his legs.

"The multiple fatalities are, as far as we know, at two locations", he said. "And he came through and he started shooting everyone in the mosque, everywhere", Mr Al-Mahmoud said. It is the second most-populous city in New Zealand behind Auckland and Wellington.

Muslims account for just over 1 percent of New Zealand's population, a 2013 census showed.

"Police urge anyone in central Christchurch to stay off the streets", he said in a statement.
