'Bomb cyclone' winter storm moves east after punishing Colorado

'Bomb cyclone' clobbers US Plains: Videos

The late winter "bomb cyclone" that stunned more than 25 states with snow, rain and wind has caused flooding that is threatening the operational safety of a nuclear power plant in southeast Nebraska.

The winter storm has been linked to at least one death.

The storm was blamed for the death of a Colorado state trooper, who was hit by a auto that slid on ice on the highway as he was attending to a vehicle wreck. Daniel Groves, 52, died on Interstate 76 after being struck by a Volvo whose driver lost control. Michigan State Police said first-responders confirmed at least 21 homes were damaged, but no injuries were immediately reported. People have been told that if possible, do not get out of the house.

A blizzard that paralyzed parts of Colorado and Wyoming barreled into the Midwest on Thursday, bringing whiteout conditions to western Nebraska and dumping heavy rain that prompted evacuations in communities father east. The National Weather Service says the intense weather might have peaked - but isn't letting up yet. Remnants of the snow fall and rain would clear from Denver and the mountain and plains areas by midday, he said.

Wind, blowing snow and snow-packed roadways also made travel treacherous in western Nebraska. The Red Cross opened shelters in Sioux Falls and Yankton. The city posted a video of the extensive flooding, urging people to stay away from the high waters.

Colorado is in a state of emergency following a major winter storm that hit the central US, including the Great Plains Region. "The best place to be is at home and off the roads".

The "bomb cyclone" contributed to a 100-car pileup on Interstate 25 in Colorado Wednesday, which left over 1,000 drivers stranded on the artery for several hours.

Nebraska, under a state of emergency since Tuesday night, is trying to cope with historic flooding.

"With the frozen ground and amount of rain our area had, it was just a flawless set of circumstances that led to the flooding we're seeing in Nebraska and Iowa", Fajman said.

In 48 hours, the freak storm, called a "bomb cyclone", has affected some 100 million Americans, the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) estimated Friday.

Such severe conditions have led to the closing of school districts in areas of Colorado, with power being unavailable to over 175,000 people.

The current bomb cyclone also whacked part of Texas - including in Amarillo, where high winds shoved a semitruck off a highway Wednesday. Extreme gusts of winds topping 100 miles per hour have slammed through areas of Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma.

"This time of year produces these kind of monsters", he said.

But in eastern Nebraska, flooding worsened Friday and remained a big concern in the lower Missouri River region - which is a major source for the Mississippi River - with the weather service issuing warnings of high water along the river and its tributaries from southeastern South Dakota to St. Louis in Missouri.

Parts of Kentucky and IN have been under tornado warnings Thursday - and one touched down IN Union County, Ky., where a motorist recorded video of the twister on his cellphone.
