New Zealand mosque shooting: At least 49 killed after gunmen open fire

New Zealand's prime minister Jacinda Ardern held press conferences following the attack on mosques in Christchurch that left 49 people dead.

The Muslim Community Center, which operates a mosque on the North Side and schools in Morton Grove and Skokie, said in a statement that it planned to hire extra security patrols and advised its members, "Please be vigilant by keeping your eyes and ears open and being aware of your surroundings".

Police said they have arrested three men and a woman, and while they don't think there are any armed offenders still at large, they can't be sure the danger has passed or the incident is confined to Christchurch.

Witness Mohan Ibrahim said he was one of 200 people in the Masjid Al Noor mosque on Deans Avenue in Christchurch when he heard shots fired. As New Zealand has stood by us so we stand shoulder to shoulder with them, and with Muslims in New Zealand, here in the United Kingdom and around the world.

Facebook, Twitter and Google companies scrambled to take down the gunman's video, which was widely available on social media for hours after the horrific attack.

After going back outside and shooting a woman there, he gets back in his auto, where the song "Fire" by the English rock band The Crazy World of Arthur Brown can be heard blasting.

There are unconfirmed reports that the shooter was influenced by Alexandre Bissonnette, the Laval University student convicted of killing six people at a mosque in Quebec City in January 2017.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Omar called the hate-filled terror attacks "devastating", saying she had woken up on Friday morning to the news.

This is the worst mass shooting in New Zealand's history.

He said he and others escaped by breaking through a glass door.

The footage showed the killer was carrying a shotgun and two fully automatic military assault rifles, with an extra magazine taped to one of the weapons so that he could reload quickly.

Officials have also not confirmed that the man charged is the same person who wrote a 74-page racist manifesto posted online, which appears to lay out a motive in the form of a hatred of non-white immigrants. He said his brother last visited Jordan two years ago.

Ardern went on to say that, "These are people who I would describe as having extremist views that have absolutely no place in New Zealand and in fact have no place in the world".

Those new amendments included greater oversight over the acquisition of ammunition, restricting sales to only firearms license holders and requiring permits for people to order guns or ammunition by mail, updating and adding more information including photographs to individuals'gun licenses, and requiring secure storage for guns.

Christchurch was the home of these victims.
