The last crime family boss to be shot in New York City was Paul Castellano.
According to a 911 call made by someone in the Cali home, the crime kingpin was also run over before he was shot, though the Daily News police sources say that claim is still under investigation.
Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said police are reviewing surveillance footage that captured the events surrounding Frank Cali's death yesterday in Staten Island.
As Mr. Castellano and his associate, Thomas Bilotti, stepped out of a limousine on East 46th Street near Third Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m., the police said, three men approached, drew automatic weapons from under their trenchcoats and opened up a barrage of gunfire at close range.
It is believed he only had one criminal conviction, for conspiring to extort money in 2008 for which he served 16 months in prison.
Following Castellano's murder, which saw the boss dramatically gunned down outside a Manhattan steakhouse after stepping out of a black limo, Gotti took over as the Gambino family don.
The Gambino family is one of New York's five historic Italian Mafia families - along with the Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo and Bonanno families.
"The Gambino crime family during Castellano's reign was the largest criminal organization in the US, with law enforcement estimating it had some 250 "'made" members" and "more than 550 lower-ranking "associate' members".
Federal prosecutors had referred to Cali in court filings in recent years as the underboss of the Gambino organization.
Shea said there has been a slight uptick in alleged mob-related violence in NY within the past year.
