New data in eternal debate over eggs, heart health

Eating as few as three eggs a week raises risk of heart disease, study suggests

The study said that an additional 300 mg of dietary cholesterol consumed each day may significantly increase risk of incident cardiovascular diseases and all-cause mortality.

The researchers said their study looked at almost 30,000 racially and ethnically diverse USA adults from six separate studies with as much as 31 years of followup.

The study can not prove cause and effect and is unlikely to be the last word on the matter, but experts said moderation was probably the safest course, advising no more than three or four eggs a week.

The findings suggest it may be time to re-evaluate the current US dietary guidelines that no longer limit cholesterol or eggs, the researchers say. For years, eggs were shunned as a major source of cholesterol - with 186 milligrams of cholesterol in a large egg, mostly found in the yolk.

"The fact that studies outside the US appear to show favorable relationships with egg intake and cardiovascular risk may speak to the importance of what other foods are consumed with eggs as part of the overall diet pattern, as recent research has demonstrated the importance of separating eggs from other foods to understand their independent impact on health outcomes", Rubin said in a statement.

Why? "The association of egg consumption and dietary cholesterol with [cardiovascular disease], although debated for decades, has more recently been thought to be less important", wrote Eckel, who was not involved in the research.

"Our study showed if two people had the exact same diet and the only difference in diet was eggs, then you could directly measure the effect of the egg consumption on heart disease", Allen said.

"The more cholesterol you consume, the higher your risk of heart disease and dying", said study senior author Norrina Allen, an associate professor of preventive medicine from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Risks were found with eggs and cholesterol in general; a separate analysis was not done for every cholesterol-rich food.

However, she told Newsweek, "Factoring dietary cholesterol together with egg consumption was somewhat "stacking the deck" statistically speaking", but added that the study was still "very well-designed". Participants were asked about their dietary habits over the last month or year in an extensive questionnaire. During the time period of the follow-up, the researcher said that there were 5,400 incident CVD events (2,088 fatal and non-fatal heart disease events and 1,302 fatal and non-fatal stroke events) and 6,132 all-cause deaths.

Prior to 2015, nutrition guidelines recommended eating less than 300 milligrams of dietary cholesterol per day.

But the Northwestern researchers said their study suggests those guidelines may have to be looked at yet again. "Good" cholesterol made by the body helps with digesting food and making hormones.

"The main message for the public is not to select a single type of food as "bad" or "good" but to evaluate your total diet in terms of variety and amount".

But more recent dietary guidelines have loosened the reins on dietary cholesterol. As Americans have embraced low-carb diets, many have turned to eggs as a reliable protein source. "For example, poached eggs on whole-grain toast is a much healthier meal than a traditional fry up".
