Four of the individuals are border guard or coast guard officials, singled out for their role in a November 25, 2018 naval confrontation, in which Russian ships fired on and seized three Ukrainian vessels in the narrow Kerch Strait the two countries share.

We, with our worldwide partners, stand with Ukraine in opposing Russia's ongoing efforts to undermine Ukrainian security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In turn, Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland has announced sanctions on 114 individuals and 15 entities, under the Special Economic Measures Act.

The EU, together with Australia, Canada and the United States, has imposed sanctions on individuals for their role in Russia's use of military force against 3 Ukrainian vessels and their crew in the Kerch Strait and Black Sea in November 2018.

European lawmakers also did not shy away from noting that the construction of the Nord Stream-2 pipeline project to carry gas from Russia to Germany underneath the Baltic Sea - which has caused a serious rift in the EU's trans-Atlantic relations with the United States - needs to be stopped as it reinforces Europe's dependency on Russian gas supplies and "threatens the EU internal market" as it is not in line with the Brussels' energy policy or the EU's strategic interests.

It said Moscow was acting "within the norms of global law" in arresting the Ukrainians.

The EU said its sanctions affected senior security service officials and military commanders accused of preventing Ukrainian ships from reaching port.

Twenty-four Ukrainian crew members were detained in the naval incident.

Turkey supports the territorial integrity of Ukraine and does not recognize the annexation of Crimea, the foreign ministry said on March 16.

"In the five years since Russian Federation started its campaign of aggression against Ukraine, we have stood firmly with our Transatlantic partners in opposition to Russia's malign and illegal actions, including its attack near the Kerch Strait".

The Treasury also imposed sanctions on two Ukrainian separatists for backing "illegitimate separatist government elections" in eastern Ukraine, Treasury said.

Among them are Russian shipbuilding giant Zelenodolsk, the hydroacoustic equipment producer Okeanpribor, a diesel engine supplier to the Russian military, Zvezda, and an electronic parts supplier to the military, Fiolent.

The billionaire was slapped with sanctions in April previous year, which targeted tycoons with close ties to the Kremlin.
