Nvidia's Ge Force GTX 1660 could be a 1080p headache for AMD's Radeon lineup

Nvidia's Ge Force GTX 1660 is available right now for £199

After unleashing the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti at the end of last month, NVIDIA is back today with an even more affordable card in the GTX 1660. Like the 1660 Ti, the standard 1660 is built on NVIDIA's Turing GPU architecture, so it shares something with the company's top-of-the-line RTX cards.

All in all, that puts the GTX 1660 a little behind the more expensive GTX 1660 Ti. The memory itself is now 6GB GDDR5 instead of 6GB GDDR6.

NVIDIA also notes that because the GTX 1660 is 120 watts anyone who owns a GTX 960 or GTX 970 card should be able to upgrade without changing their power supply, so long as they have an 8-pin power connector. Slower memory and fewer CUDA cores also mean that it is around 10 to 15 percent slower than the Geforce GTX 1660 Ti but still packs enough punch to be faster than the Radeon RX 590, at least in some games. The GTX 1660 6GB is likely to offer plenty of performance per buck/euro or pound in the mid-range market, and it looks like a great graphics card for gaming at 1080p resolution. It promises to be 130 percent faster than the GTX 960 and 35 percent faster than the GTX 1060 3GB at 1080p according to Nvidia, which should make it a decent option for 1080p gaming if it holds true in real world tests. Move forward three years to today and that problem is fairly mute, considering NVIDIA has just released the VR-ready GeForce GTX 1660 starting from £199.
