Vascular Care Leaders Underscore PAD Risks for Americans Living with Kidney Disease on World Kidney Day

Faux pas fashion show: Robson Square turned into catwalk for World Kidney Day

World Kidney Day is a global health awareness campaign aimed at raising the awareness on the importance of healthy kidneys.

The HSA said 62 people took advantage of Thursday morning's (14 March) free World Kidney Day screenings. Whether you have kidney disease, one of the risk factors, or are simply concerned, discuss it with a friend or family member. Such conditions then require treatments like dialysis or/and a kidney transplant.

Consuming lots of fluid helps the kidneys clear sodium, urea and toxins from the body which lowers one's risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

In India the prevalence of this disease has nearly doubled in recent years and is expected to increase due to the various risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, stress, obesity and other unhealthy eating habits.

The nephrologist said that based on various studies, chronic kidney diseases were responsible for eight to 10 per cent of medical admissions.

It's important to keep your blood pressure in check, because high BP can cause damage to the kidneys.

Another preventable cause, particularly in an Indian context, is renal tract stone disease. The institute aims to properly control diabetes (fasting glucose in 90-130 range and random blood glucose of less than 180) and high blood pressure (keeping it below 130/80), and manage lipid/cholesterol levels (target LDL of less than 100, triglycerides less than 150) through a low protein and low salt diet.

Some antibiotics can be harmful to the kidneys, so taking antibiotics without consulting your doctor is never a good idea.

Ominisan said: "I am happy that I got screened today because I have been waiting to go to the hospital for checkup, but there is no money and I know many people here are like that". The worldwide number is predicted at 850 million as per the World Kidney Day organization.

More information on topics including early detection, signs and symptoms is available on the Kidney Foundation website. Of all the CKD patients worldwide, approximately 2.4 million cases end up fatal per year.

Kidney disease can be detected by the doctor after performing certain tests to check the functionality of the organ. Exercising will also increase muscle strength, lower blood fat levels, improve insulin sensitivity and reduce body weight, all of which are great for your kidneys. But the good news is that being mindful of certain things can avert it.

Yang Mu, chief physician with the department of nephrology at the First Affiliated Hospital of University of Science and Technology of China, said that unhealthy lifestyles - excessive intake of carbohydrates, fat and salt - had not only increased the burden on people's kidneys, but also the risks of CKD triggers, such as diabetes and hypertension.

He said there was need to make the screening for kidney diseases a primary healthcare intervention.

Eventually, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be needed as the disease approaches kidney failure, and the patient needs to be put on a transplant list. After all, the kidneys do perform some critical functions for all of us.
