The hunt for the cause of an Ethiopian Airlines plane crash that killed all 157 people on board gathered pace on Saturday when investigators successfully downloaded the cockpit voice recorder and fresh details emerged of the final seconds of the flight.
The Lion Air crash also came just minutes after takeoff, killing 189 people, and United States authorities say there is evidence of similarities between the accidents. Acting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) administrator Daniel Elwell has said he does not know how long the U.S. grounding will last.
Montreal-based Air Canada on Friday morning withdrew its outlook issued in February for the first quarter and full year of 2019 "in light of the current uncertainty" over the planes that carry as many as 12,000 of its customers a day.
Victim identification would be done to scientific global standards, and internationally-recognized organizations such as Interpol were going to be involved in the process, she said.
"Overall, we view the interruptions from the 737 MAX grounding as a temporary, one-off issue", Spracklin wrote.
And Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger - noted for his safe landing of a damaged plane on the Hudson River in NY without loss of life - questioned the lack of experience of the Ethiopian first officer on the doomed flight, who reportedly had only 200 hours of flight time. The information that they contain helps explain 90 percent of all crashes, according to aviation experts.
An FAA emergency order has grounded 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 aircraft until further notice, effectively taking the aircraft out of the skies globally. Ethiopian Airlines says its pilots received special training on the software.
There are safety concerns about Boeing's newest and fastest selling narrow-bodied aircraft after two deadly crashes in a matter of months.
Both major Canadian airlines relied heavily on the 737 Max planes, and warned the groundings would cause delays and disruptions as they deployed other aircraft.
In Addis Ababa, a source who has listened to the air traffic control recording of the plane's communications said flight 302 had an unusually high speed after take-off before the plane reported problems and asked permission to climb quickly.
The plane vanished from radar at 10,800 feet. Shortly after their takeoffs, both crews tried to return to the airports but crashed.
"Break break, request back to home", the Times quoted the pilot as saying just prior to the crash.
