Israeli launches Gaza strikes after rockets fired at Tel Aviv

Rockets fired from Gaza target Tel Aviv for first time since 2014

The attacks come as the April 9 election nears and security has been a hot topic as tensions between the two warring sides have been ratcheting up with the most recent incident occurring last Saturday when a ballistic was launched from Gaza at Israel.

Hamas, which dominates Gaza, insisted it was not behind the rocket fire.

The Badr site of Hamas's military wing, located near Hamas leader Ismail Haniya's family home in Shati refugee camp on the outskirts of Gaza City, was damaged, with rubble strewn across the road, an AFP journalist said.

Red alert sirens were sounded after several missiles were fired from the besieged Gaza Strip towards southern and central Israel, Hebrew-language news media reported on predawn Friday.

Smoke and flames are seen during an Israeli air attack on Gaza on Friday.

Earlier on Thursday, Hamas was forced to aggressively put down riots in Gaza City in protest over eroding economic conditions caused by the corrupt Islamic leadership.

The organisers of Friday protests along the Gaza-Israel demarcation line say they are calling off this week's rallies.

In addition, an underground compound to produce rockets was destroyed, several military compounds were attacked as well as a Hamas naval post which is also used to manufacture weapons, the IDF spokesperson reported.

Pompeo's interview was recorded on Thursday, before Israeli defense officials said the Gaza rockets had been fired by mistake.

Tel Aviv mayor Ron Huldai ordered public bomb shelters opened, and told local television that one of the Gaza rockets "apparently fell into the sea, the other hit somewhere but not in" the city.

Pompeo also defended the administration's work toward a denuclearization deal with North Korea, saying real progress was made in Hanoi even though a final agreement was not reached.

Earlier, the military had held Hamas responsible for the rocket fire at Tel Aviv, the first such attack in five years.

Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies and have fought three wars since the Islamic militant group seized power in Gaza in 2007.

Hamas denied responsibility for the initial rocket attack and promised to take action against the perpetrators, saying such attacks went "against the national consensus".

A delegation from Egypt, which has acted as mediator between Israel and Hamas, was in Gaza before the strikes and reportedly left after warnings.

Cabinet Minister Naftali Bennett, a hard-line rival of Netanyahu's, called on the prime minister to convene a gathering of his Security Cabinet and demand the army "present a plan to defeat Hamas". Hamas possesses a large arsenal of rockets and missiles capable of striking deep inside Israel.
