Johnny Manziel reportedly signs deal to join AAF

Johnny Manziel who was released by the CFL's Montreal Alouettes on Feb. 27 now appears set to sign with a team in the Alliance of American Football

Johnny Manziel has signed a player agreement with the AAF and will join the Memphis Express, according to a release from the Alliance.

Manziel was released by the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League earlier this month.

According to Shefter, Manziel would have been allocated to San Antonio, but the Commanders waived his rights, so the controversial quarterback will go through the league's waiver system.

Manziel, 26, was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy. He's their second quarterback this season, after the team started with Christian Hackenberg but later benched the former Penn State quarterback.

Former Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman Trophy victor Johnny Manziel has signed a player agreement with the Alliance of American football, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Polian also said he believes Manziel will benefit from "the coaching and mentorship" of Memphis coach Mike Singletary.

He immediately becomes one of the biggest names in the AAF as one of its few former National Football League first-round picks, notably among them Birmingham running back Trent Richardson. The CFL also effectively barred Manziel from joining any other team in the league.

Standard AAF contracts are for three years and $250,000.

Manziel will be immediately eligible to play for the Express, an AAF spokesperson said.

Manziel has dealt with several off-field issues. Manziel was released by the CFL on February 27, citing Manziel had "contravened the agreement which made him eligible to play in the league". In 2016, a domestic assault charge against Manziel in Dallas was dismissed after he took an anger management course and participated in the NFL's substance abuse program. He went on to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the Browns in 2014.

Manziel is expected to report to the Express on Sunday.
