Mob Boss Gunned Down Outside Staten Island Home

Reputed Gambino crime boss shot and killed outside home

A man has reportedly been arrested in connection with the killing of Francesco "Frank" Cali, the alleged leader of the notorious Gambino crime family. Comello was allegedly upset by Cali's family standing in the way of that.

It was the first execution of a mob boss in New York City in more than 30 years. The Gambino crime boss was assassinated outside Sparks Steakhouse in Manhattan in 1985.

Cali allegedly had strong ties to the Sicilian mob.

The 53-year-old Cali, who was shot to death on Wednesday outside his Staten Island home, was allegedly the head of the Gambino family, one of the five Italian-American Mafia families that have historically dominated organized crime in NY and New Jersey.

Surveillance video of the killing showed a man, allegedly Mr Comello, crash his auto into Mr Cali's parked SUV, drawing Mr Cali outside in what might have been a ploy to lure him out of the house, Mr Shea said.

At his home in Brick, N.Y., members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Task Force picked up the Staten Island man, who has been identified by WNBC-TV and the New York Daily News as Anthony Camello.

Comello was initially speaking to investigators but then retained a lawyer and stopped talking, officials said.

Cali was gunned down outside his home in Staten Island, New York, Wednesday, cops said.

Multiple press accounts since 2015 said Cali had ascended to the top spot in the gang, although he never faced a criminal charge saying so. He is listed as single and a high school graduate. Comello's truck was issued a parking summons in Staten Island on the day of Cali's murder, Shea said.

After Gotti died in prison in 2002 the mob's influence on the United States eastern seaboard waned, but Cali's murder put it back in the headlines. His wife is the niece of purported mobster John Gambino.

Police didn't believe that was the case, and some law enforcement felt early on this was connected to a personal beef.

The suspect's fingerprint reportedly was lifted from Cali's vehicle. He had ALL screws lost!
