President Muhammadu Buhari

Isaac Adewole, on Thursday said Nigeria had been ranked the 4th country with the highest number of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Minister of Health, Prof.

Adewole disclosed this during the presidential unveiling of the 2018 Nigeria AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS) result at the Banquet Hall of Aso Rock, Presidential villa.

The result of the survey presented stated that HIV prevalence estimates varied across Nigeria with the highest prevalence in South South zone and the lowest prevalence in North West zone. "I also welcome the move by the Nigerian private sector to establish a National HIV Trust Fund in the coming months to support our goal of ensuring that all Nigerians have access to high quality HIV treatment and prevention services", he said. "We know we can support HIV-positive mothers, hence ensuring the next generation is free from HIV", he said.

This came up as Nigeria's president, Muhammadu Buhari, unveiled the findings of the Nigeria HIV/AIDS NAIIS and launched the Revised National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework 2019-2021, which will form the future response to the country's epidemic.

"For the first time, the end of AIDs as a public threat by 2030 is truly in sight for our country".

"Now that we have the data, I urge us all to work together to ensure that we deliver ahead of 2030".

"The official HIV prevalence for persons aged 15-49 years in Nigeria is now 1.4 percent". According to him, the new data shows that the HIV epidemic was greater in some parts of the country and minimal in others.

"This is a transformative moment for the country, because the survey is the largest survey we have managed to have in the history of the response to HIV".

The President said he was excited that the rate of Persons Living with the scourge has dropped to 1.9m. Let us, therefore, work collectively and push for the last mile. HIV prevalence among the same age group in the North Central zone is 2.0 per cent, and in the South East zone (1.9%).

"This result is good news as it indicates a lower burden which will indicate new people on treatment".

He said availability of accurate and reliable HIV data for the country was crucial for planning effective health intervention to arrest the HIV epidemic and ultimately rid the country of this health threat.

He said the government and its partners have what it takes to support people who are HIV-positive, "to provide treatment, to protect their families and to help people live long and healthy lives".

"I commend the Government of Nigeria and its partners for conducting this ambitious survey, which provides us with a much better understanding of the country's HIV epidemic", said Mr Sidibé. Buhari reminded the gathering of an earlier commitment he made at the UN General Assembly in 2017 to progressively add 50,000 Nigerians on treatment every year using government resources.

Commenting on the survey results, the US Embassy Charge d'affaires, David J. Young expressed excitement over the new survey.
