A Fordham University student who climbed the campus' landmark bell tower Sunday to snap photos of the New York City skyline suffered critical injuries after she accidentally fell. Emergency responders arrived on the scene at 3:17 a.m. Paramedics had trouble getting a pulse, and although her vitals flat-lined, they were able to revive her.
Emergency Medical Services rushed the student to the local hospital, where she was placed on life support.
Monfries had allegedly been participating in a senior rite of passage.
Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it".
Sydney was studying journalism and interned at InStyle magazine - being set to graduate in May.
Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, from Portland, Oregon, suffered fatal injuries following the horror plunge at Fordham University campus in NY, weeks before graduation.
A U.S. university student has died after she fell more than 12 metres from a campus bell tower in the early hours of Sunday morning. Her family has been notified but her name was not yet released. "Theirs is an unimaginable loss, and we share their grief".
It's unclear what led up to her fall.
School spokesman Bob Howe told the New York Post the tower was "always locked" and that the organisation was looking into whether the lock had been tampered with. The university said they will confer a bachelor's degree upon Sydney posthumously, which will present to her parents at the appropriate time. Her uncle Gregory Monfries, said: "This is not a good time".
