REPORT: Pelicans Hire David Griffin as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations

INDEPENDENCE OH- SEPTEMBER 26 Head coach David Blatt and general manager David Griffin of the Cleveland Cavaliers answers questions during media day at Cleveland Clinic Courts

Now he's the man overseeing the Anthony Davis Sweepstakes.

On Friday afternoon, the New Orleans Pelicans completed their search for a new President of Basketball Operations when they named former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin to the position.

The Pelicans parted ways with former general manager Dell Demps on February 15.

Griffin has been working as an National Basketball Association broadcast analyst since parting ways with the Cavs following the 2017 season.

The Pelicans (33-49) finished 13th in the Western Conference this year and will miss the postseason for the sixth time in eight seasons.

Griffin was the first of the interviews April 4 and was selected from a field of candidates that also included interim GM Danny Ferry, Brooklyn Nets executive Trajan Langdon and Houston Rockets assistant GM Gersson Rosas.

Griffin nows holds those cards, making the general outline of a potential Davis-to-Boston deal clear as day.

When he did play, it was rarely for much more than 20 minutes a game.

Such a hire gives a team like the Los Angeles Lakers a better chance to acquire Davis considering the brow-raising "Godfather" package (which includes two first-round picks, Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram) they offered for him prior to the trade deadline and Griffin's connection with Lakers superstar LeBron James.

The second-year shooter reportedly wouldn't mind a trade to New Orleans, for what it's worth. Boy do the Celtics still have a bucket of those. He also has some playoff experience as a starter.

Davis demanded a trade earlier in the season, and he could become an unrestricted free agent in 2020.
