Trump Says He Plans to Award Tiger Woods the Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Donald Trump said Monday that he'll award golfer Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, after Woods won his fifth Masters title over the weekend. That's next on the list for Tiger Woods.

While it may seem like a bit much, and maybe it is, it's also not unprecedented for a major sports figure to receive the award. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus were honored by president George W. Bush in 2004 and 2005, respectively.

Trump did not in his tweet specify when the ceremony will take place.

The medal, the nation's highest civilian honor, is bestowed by the president to individuals deemed to have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Trump, of course, is an avid golfer, who played alongside Woods and Nicklaus in early February at one of Trump's Florida courses, with Nicklaus's son Steve rounding out the foursome.

Trump handed out his first medals a year ago, making a posthumous award to Elvis and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and baseball legend Babe Ruth.

Trump's assessment then of Woods' game was spot-on, with the president predicting that Woods would "be winning majors again".

Mr. Trump owns a dozen golf courses in the USA and frequently spends his weekends at his clubs in Florida, Virginia or New Jersey. "What a fantastic life comeback for a really great guy!"
