The RSF and the army attempted to remove roadblocks erected by protesters to shield the sit-in from attempts to break it up, eyewitnesses said.

Bashir's 30 years in power ended last week when the military ousted him after months-long protests that left dozens of demonstrators dead in clashes with security forces.

Follow the money American actor George Clooney, who has campaigned hard to draw attention to the conflict in Sudan's Darfur region, over the weekend urged world powers to pressure the military "to turn over full executive power to a civilian-led transitional government".

If the junta fails to hand power to civilians within 15 days, the AU will suspend "the participation of the Sudan in all AU's activities until the restoration of constitutional order", the body's Peace and Security Council (PSC) said in a statement.

The leader of that council, Lieutenant General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, said Saturday he is committed to transferring power to a civilian government within two years.

The SPA also demanded the confiscation of properties belonging to al-Bashir's National Congress Party and the release of soldiers who sided with their "revolution".

At the news conference, the SPA said the military had promised to protect the sit-in.

The Sudanese Professionals Association, which is behind the protests, urged people to head to the sit-in Monday and defend it from any new attempts by the military to disperse the demonstrators.

Outside the Defense Ministry on Monday, about 5,000 protesters chanted "Freedom, freedom" and appealed to the army to protect them.

Since then the head of the military council and of Sudan's powerful intelligence services have both been replaced, as protesters have continued to call for change.

Some drummed and waved national flags as they mingled in the street, while others took shelter from the sun under parasols and makeshift tents.

The protest outside the compound, which also includes the intelligence headquarters and the presidential residence, began on April 6, after more than three months of protests triggered by a deepening economic crisis.

"The decision whether to extradite [Bashir] to ICC will be made by a popularly elected government and not the transitional military council", military council member Jalaluddin Sheikh told journalists during a visit to the Ethiopian capital.

The replacement of former ruler Omar Al-Bashir with a transitional military council was an unacceptable coup d'etat, the African Union said.

When the military announced Bashir's ousting, they said he had been arrested and was being kept at a "safe place".

These Sudanese fighters have been drawn principally from the Rapid Support Forces, a tribal paramilitary group aligned with the Sudanese government and previously known as the Janjaweed.

Hemedti has also met with other Western diplomats, including the USA chargé d'affaires and Dutch ambassador to Sudan.
