Tiktok: India bans video sharing app

Govt acts against Tik Tok after SC refuses stay on ban

Madras High Court had on April 3 asked the government to ban TikTok, saying it encouraged pornography and warning that sexual predators could target child users.

As per the officials", "The High Court asked the government to prohibit download of TikTok application. The app was like any other social media platform, it said, adding that singling out TikTok was discriminatory and arbitrary.

This is indeed a big blow for TikTok, because India is the country where they are witnessing highest growth, and a ban from Google and Apple app stores will halt their growth. The Supreme Court has listed the matter again for April 22, 2019, to be apprised of the outcome of the hearing on the April 16th, 2019 before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court.

"The said ban, if not lifted immediately, shall cause severe prejudice and irreparable harm to the Petitioner Company and result in competitors gaining a significant and potentially irreversible advantage over the petitioner company".

TikTok is a social media app for short-form mobile videos launched in China in September 2016 as "Douyin" and one year later, it was introduced to globally as "TikTok". On its part, TikTok has said that it's not liable to be punished for what "third parties" do.

India's top court on Tuesday refused an appeal by its owner, Chinese company ByteDance, to suspend the order.

The "disproportionate" ban has resulted in infringement of fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression, it said.

TikTok released a statement on the case and said, "As per the proceedings in the Supreme Court today, the Madras High Court will hear the matter on ex parte ad interim order". Apple did not respond to Gadgets 360's request for comment, though the TikTok app was not available to download via the App Store. He further contested that the Indian High Court in Madras had issued an interim order without giving TikTok the opportunity to defend itself.

Reuters reported earlier on TikTok's removal from Google's app store in India. Many Chinese apps, including TikTok, have come under fire not only in India but also in the U.S., the UK, Hong Kong and Indonesia for content that is often dangerously close to exposing children to nudity and possibly those who seek to coerce or groom underage users into committing explicit acts. According to a survey in 2018, India accounts for 39% of the user base of Tik Tok. The app is hugely popular among all age group in India and has been criticised by several leaders.

With over 54 million users every month, TikTok allows its users to create and share videos and these may have inappropriate content.
