Jet Airways Naresh Goyal

Naresh Goyal puts in bid to buy stake in Jet Airways

Goyal built the airline into India's largest carrier by offering an alternative to the unreliable schedules of the country's state-owned airlines.

Last week Thursday Jet Airways reportedly grounded another 10 planes due to unpaid leasing fees.

Currently, the management has been told that the lead bank of the consortium, SBI, is willing to infuse almost Rs 20 crore every day until May 7, but the management of Jet Airways has conveyed that amount of money will not help in a business like aviation, where there are a lot of uncertainties. "They have approached them (banks) for interim funding and on Monday they will approach the banks again", Kharola said.

The airline has also cancelled its long-haul, west-bound operations to and from Amsterdam, London and Paris till April 16, Jet Airways said on Sunday.

The development came on a day when the airline operated only 7 aircraft on domestic routes due to grounding of over 80 per cent of its fleet by lessors, which has resulted in the cancellation of several daily flights, inconveniencing scores of passengers at various airports.

A day before, the airline chose to halt West-bound worldwide departures after it was left with only 14 aircraft from around 120 a year ago, triggering speculations over its survival as a lengthy stake sale process continued.

Also on Tuesday, the BSE stock exchange in Mumbai announced it was seeking clarification from Jet Airways of Indian news reports that the company planned to temporarily shutter its operations. Earlier, the Indian government was said to be looking into options to save jobs at Jet Airways, including by asking other airlines such as low-priced operator SpiceJet consider taking over some aircraft, according to people familiar with the matter.

Jet Airways needs an urgent fund infusion if it has to continue operating.

"It could be financial investor, it could be airline.including Naresh Goyal himself or Etihad".

Friday was the deadline for prospective bidders to express an interest in acquiring a 75 percent stake in Jet. The airline will create appropriate security over the company's assets for securing the existing facilities extended by the lenders and the proposed immediate funding support of up to Rs 1,500 crore by way of an appropriate debt instrument.
