With franchise tags the Seahawks could keep Russell Wilson through 2021
About 45 minutes after the deadline he imposed on the Seattle Seahawks to finalize his contract extension, Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson posted a humorous, rather "sleepy" celebration video along with his singer wife Ciara from bed.
"Hey Seattle, we got a deal", the star signal-caller said, as Ciara rested her head on his chest, to his 3.6 million Instagram followers and 5.4 million Twitter followers.
ESPN's Brady Henderson reports Russell Wilson reached a new four-year contract deal with the Seattle Seahawks, which includes a $140 million extension with a $65 million signing bonus and now makes him the highest-paid National Football League player in history.
Wilson's per year average of $35 million tops Aaron Rodgers' average annual salary of $33.5 million as part of the $134 million extension he signed last year with the Green Bay Packers. If the Seahawks can't lock up Wilson to a new deal, the franchise likely will use the franchise tag on the quarterback.
Wilson will also receive a $65 million signing bonus.
When asked about a new deal on Monday at the start of offseason workouts, Wentz left the contract discussions to his agent. He has the highest yearly average salary at $35 million per season. Per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, the deal is a four-year extension that will make the total contract a five-year deal worth $157 million through the 2023 season. Ian Rapoport reported that $107 million of the deal is guaranteed.
Wilson's contract has one fewer year than Stafford's, so the annual can expectedly be higher, but it's a significant jump. During the 2013 season, he led the team to its first Super Bowl victory in its history and has logged six Pro Bowl appearances. He also ran only 67 times, a career low, as the improved run game and offensive line play allowed Wilson to stay in the pocket more and scramble for his life less. He's trying to figure out at every turn how he can be a great player, and he has never wavered, he has never taken a step back from that at any time, never missed an opportunity to step up to the challenges in front of him, because he's always on ready. "I'm excited about that".
